Why glycerin matters
If you only ever learn one piece of soap chemistry, make it this one. It explains almost everything about why two bars that look identical can feel completely different an hour after you use them.
What glycerin is
Glycerin is a humectant. That is a substance that attracts water and holds onto it. Applied to skin, it draws moisture into the outer layer — the stratum corneum — and helps keep it there. Well-hydrated skin at that level stays flexible and comfortable. Skin stripped of it feels tight, and that tight feeling after a wash is not cleanliness. It is your skin barrier telling you it lost more than it wanted to.
Glycerin is not exotic. It appears in a large share of the serums and moisturisers on the market, usually near the top of the list, because it is cheap, well studied and genuinely works.
Where soap's glycerin comes from
Here is the part that surprises people: nobody has to add glycerin to soap. Soap makes its own.
When oils meet lye, saponification produces two outputs — soap and glycerin — and roughly a tenth of what comes out of the pot is glycerin. It is not an additive. It is a structural consequence of the reaction. Every bar of true soap ever made has contained it, unless somebody deliberately took it out.
Why most bars do not have it any more
Because it is worth more somewhere else.
Glycerin is in demand across cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and food manufacturing. A large soap plant producing tonnes a day can separate the glycerin out, sell it into those markets, and turn what was a by-product into a second income. There is a manufacturing bonus too: a bar with the glycerin removed is harder, less prone to softening in a wet soap dish, and easier to ship and stack.
From a factory's point of view this is simply good sense. From your skin's point of view, the most useful thing the bar produced has been sold to somebody else.
What that means in the shower
A cold-process bar leaves a very thin film of glycerin on the skin as you rinse. It is why handmade soap tends not to leave that squeaky, tight sensation, and why people often find they reach for body lotion less often after switching. It is not a dramatic effect and we are not going to oversell it — it is the difference between skin that feels comfortable after a shower and skin that feels like it needs something putting back.
The drawback, honestly
Glycerin loves water. That is the whole point of it, and it does not stop being true when the bar is sitting in a puddle on the edge of the bath. Leave a glycerin-rich bar in standing water and it will happily absorb it and go soft.
This is the single most common piece of feedback we get from people new to handmade soap, and the fix takes no effort: give the bar a dish that drains, and keep it out of the direct spray. How to tell whether a bar still has its glycerin
- It was made by cold process and says so. Nobody goes to the trouble of extracting glycerin from a small batch.
- The oils are listed as saponified — sodium olivate, sodium cocoate and so on — rather than as detergents.
- Glycerin is not listed separately near the bottom. In a handmade bar it does not need to be added, because it never left.
- It softens if you leave it in water. Ironically, the annoying trait is the proof.
Every Juna bar keeps all of the glycerin it makes. It is the least glamorous reason to buy handmade soap, and probably the best one. You can see the full ingredient list on any of the four bars — the glycerin is not on it, because we never had to put it there.
