Why supermarket soap isn't actually soap
Pick up a bar in any supermarket and read the front of the pack closely. A surprising number of them never use the word soap. They say beauty bar, cleansing bar, moisturising bar, body bar. That is not marketing whimsy. It is legal precision, and it tells you something worth knowing.
Soap has an actual definition
Soap is not a vibe or a category. It is the result of one specific chemical reaction. You take fats or oils, you combine them with an alkali — lye — and over hours and then weeks the two convert each other into something new. The reaction is called saponification, and it produces exactly two things: soap, and glycerin.
That is the whole recipe, and it has not changed in two thousand years. If a bar was not made that way, it is not soap. It is something else that has been shaped like soap.
So what is in the other bars?
Most mass-market bars are built from synthetic detergents — syndets, in the trade. Instead of saponified plant oils, the cleansing comes from manufactured surfactants: sodium lauroyl isethionate, sodium cocoyl isethionate, sodium lauryl sulfate, and their relatives. Those are mixed with binders, hardeners, chelating agents, preservatives, opacifiers and fragrance, then extruded and stamped into a bar shape at speed.
It is an impressive piece of industrial chemistry. It is simply not soap.
Why the industry moved away from soap
Four reasons, and all of them are about manufacturing rather than about your skin.
- Cost. Synthetic surfactants are cheaper per bar than good plant oils, and the price barely moves with the harvest.
- Hard water. Real soap reacts with the minerals in hard water and leaves the film people call soap scum. Detergents do not.
- Speed. A syndet bar is finished when it leaves the press. A cold-process bar has to sit on a rack for a month before anyone can sell it.
- The glycerin is worth more elsewhere. This is the one most people have never heard. Saponification makes glycerin whether you want it or not, and glycerin sells at a good price to the cosmetics, pharmaceutical and food industries. Take it out of the bar, sell it separately, and you have turned a by-product into a revenue line.
Is a detergent bar bad for you?
Honestly? Not automatically, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Syndet bars are usually formulated at a skin-friendly pH of around 5.5, and dermatologists do recommend them for particular conditions. Real soap is alkaline — somewhere around pH 9 to 10 — which for most people is entirely fine, because skin re-establishes its own pH within about an hour. If a doctor has told you to use a pH-balanced wash, follow that advice and not a soap company's blog post.
Our objection to the supermarket bar is a different one, and it is narrower:
- You usually cannot tell what is in it. A single word, fragrance or parfum, can legally stand in for dozens of undisclosed aroma chemicals.
- The glycerin your bar made has been taken out and sold to somebody else.
- The ingredient list is optimised for the factory — for shelf life, for extrusion pressure, for a consistent white — not for the ten minutes a day when it is on your skin.
The ten-second label test
You do not need a chemistry degree. Turn the pack over and look for these:
- Sodium olivate, sodium cocoate, sodium palmate, sodium ricinoleate. These are saponified oils — olive, coconut, palm, castor. This is real soap.
- Sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium lauroyl isethionate, sodium cocoyl isethionate, cocamidopropyl betaine. These are detergents. This is a syndet bar.
- Fragrance or parfum with nothing after it. An undisclosed blend. Compare it with a list that names the oils: tangerine, cedarwood, clove.
- Glycerin appearing low down the list. Often a sign it was removed during processing and a little was added back.
A cold-process bar reads like a shopping list you could take to a market. That is the tell.
What we do instead
